Why I Love Poetry
Poetry
give me
the space
to create
without
constraint
When I was teaching middle school students creative writing, I always loved introducing free verse poetry. There is something powerful about putting your feelings into words, and it is beautiful to see how a few words can pack a big punch. As much as I love reading my children classic poetry and poems with rhyme scheme, I think for older children, it is equally as important to read them poems that convey emotions and experiences that they can relate to. I usually shared my own poetry because it was more personal, and I was able to talk to them about how I went about writing it.
On my website for middle-grade students, you can find some of my poetry under the label "From the Desk of Mrs. J." You are welcome to use my poems as examples, but I highly encourage you to write your own to share with your children/students!
