The Power to Veto

I believe reserving the power to veto books at the library is important in this day and age. There have been a number of times that my children have been drawn in by the covers of books that’s content that is not appropriate for young children. My kids know that I have the power to veto a book and they are now used to me saying, “We are not going to check out that book.” And they are also used to going without an explanation as to why. When they are older those are conversations we will have but for now, the power to gently veto books is important.

What values your family holds can help you decide if/when to veto a book (horror stories/haunted houses are on my veto list). I try not to veto “candy” books (ones that lacks valuable content but are still fun for the kids to read- for example the Paw Patrol books) unless I really have an objection to the content. This is just one way I help my kids navigate the library.

You can read about the book guides I use to help direct my children to high quality books that will stimulate their brains and expose them to the good, true, and beautiful!
