Collectables
When inspiration strikes, a writer's notebook is a great place to collect ideas. But sometimes, inspiration isn't striking, and it is hard to begin writing. That's why I always encourage my students and children to collect inspiration regularly so that when it is time to sit down to practice writing, there are always ideas ready to inspire.
I like to think of the items collected–such as quotes, Scripture, artwork, music lyrics, etc.–as "collectables." They are physical items that can be copied or pasted into a notebook and kept for a rainy day when writing ideas are far and few between. They may be just what is needed to get an idea rolling!
I've begun creating "collectables" that can be printed and copied into a writer's notebook. I would encourage the child to write the quotes by hand and maybe even draw their own picture. The collectables are meant to serve as inspiration and contain small graphics for writers like me who do not enjoy collecting sloppy drawings in my notebook. Think of it like a scrapbook page that can inspire reflections, poetry, and stories. The child should have the freedom to choose if the shared work inspires them to collect it!
Here is an example of a collectable that I created after listening to Forrest Frank's song "Lemonade." You can download the free collectable here! For more collectables, visit my website for students: Creative Cafe
