Becoming

As I'm teaching my little ones to love reading, I'm learning about the power of using terms like
not yet and I can. Even more so, I'm learning how powerful it is to tell a child that their efforts are helping them become a reader. I love teaching them that "reading" the pictures is a very important step in becoming a reader.

The beauty of the word becoming is that it applies to so many other areas of our lives. We can tell our children that when they practice drawing they are becoming an artist. That when they make observations about the world around them they are becoming a scientist. That when they choose to do little acts of love they are becoming a saint—little by little, day after day.

We have the opportunity every day to become more and more the person God is calling us to be.

Teaching our children to become their truest self can begin with reading them beautiful books, encouraging simple acts of kindness, and encouraging our children to look at the world with hearts full of wonder. And the gift God will give us in return is the opportunity to see the world, once again, through the eyes of a child.
